I don't really though they were gargoyles when I saw the picture so I serched a little bir on the web to find the definition of gargoyle. And this is were I found (Wikipedia):
"In architecture, a gargoyle is a carved stone grotesque with a spout designed to convey water from a roof and away from the side of a building."
"The term originates from the French gargouille, originally "throat" or "gullet";[1] cf. Latin gurgulio, gula, and similar words derived from the root gar, "to swallow", which represented the gurgling sound of water (e.g., Spanish garganta, "throat"; Spanish gárgola, "gargoyle")".
This one on El Chanal doesn't really look grotesque. Actually it looks funny to me. But on the other side it's true that they are decoring the drainpipe (at least the first one, and it's over it. No like the ones in gothic buildings, in which the gargoyle is actually the drainpipe itself.) and also they are made of stone (or something like that. Cement maybe).
So I would not really classify it as gargoyles. Also because they are a very important characteristic of the Gothic art and these ones don't look really "gothic".
Firstly, I need to tell you that I had never seen so original gargoyles like those...
Surely, many of you think that they are not, but if we stop to think and analyze these pieces of art (because really they are!), we can see that the opposite is true. I need to accept that when I saw them, I thought that Charlie was teasing us, because these images of "alleged gargoyles" do not look like at all. But then I started thinking that if he wanted to share them to us, was for something... Its nature, its essence... I do not know.
So I tried to see more than them and I discovered that these objects are gargoyles, because: -They are made of stone (we can see the texture of the objects), -They demonstrate an imaginary being (as it has no definite shape...) And what I found most important is that: -They scaring off witches, demons and other evil spirits, because although not seem grotesque (which was, as generally represented), these gargoyles scare... because I think, that the only way to werd off were that if the gargoyles were “cute” (because they were not used to seeing pretty good spirits).
Honestly, the first time that I saw the images I laughed, I laughed because they look funny; like little cute monsters.
Also the first time that I saw them I thought that they were really gargoyles, but then I doubted. If we analyze them, they don’t look like really gargoyles: they are kind of cute, they don’t have a scare look; they are on a house in the Channal, not in a big and huge building like other buildings from the gothic style, etc.
However, I think they are really gargoyles. Maybe they don’t have the look as we know, but they have the function. I read that the gargoyles were, in part, to protect the buildings from bad things, so these gargoyles in the picture are doing the same thing; they are protecting the house where they belong.
We know that every culture had their own way to represent things, every culture is different from other. So these "gargoyles" are gargoyles but from other culture... the culture that developed in this side of the world.
I have to say that I liked the images, they are not as the ones that we had seen, and as I said in the beginning, they made me laugh for a while. =)
Charlie…I loved the photographs you posted. When I saw them I started to laugh a lot. I think that these “primitive” gargoyles are great. They are funny, and curious.
- According with the description of a real gargoyle, they have a grotesque appearance, “and these ones are grotesque” (jejejeje).
- Gargoyles used to be made with stone, “and these ones seem to be made with that material”.
- Gargoyles were placed in high places, out of buildings, etc because they were supposed to take care of that place, “and these ones seem to be placed in a high place (and they seem to be watching around the area)”.
In my opinion, I would consider these strange figures are “gargoyles” ¿What do you think? The Chanal is a very interesting archeological place; the most important thing is that is in this beautiful state: Colima. I have had the pleasure to visit it, and I think is a wonderful place. The grass is green, there are a lot of trees, the temples and structures are wonderful.
The inhabitants of the Chanal used to make objects with rock, wood and iron. I think these gargoyles were made by them: but in a particular style “jejejej”.
In conclusion I say that they are very nice. Maybe we can say they are very simple and “ugly”, but we have to appreciate our culture, we have to be proud of the culture and contributions of our ancestors.
I just loved these gargoyles…they are so nice…they seem to be small and cute.
They are not gargoyles!! 1.A gargoyle is not cute! 2.A gargoyle is grotesque! 3.A gargoyle scares! 4.A gargoyle is bigger! 5.A gargoyle is artistic caved on stone! 6.A gargoyle is not smiling! 7.A gargoyle doesn't make people laugh!
Come on! These ones are just a creative work of a child! They look like a Monsters Inc. character made with play-do! They don't represent any culture! They could be art but not gargoyles at all!!!
I just want to add a small coment to this pictures. I think they are really funny! What I think is that people try to interpretate the gargoyles and it didnt work the way the really want them to work. I think its pretty funny but interesting.
As Isaac said gargoyles are scary and this ones are really funny and kind of cute :)
